SUNCOAST CREDIT UNION FOUNDATION GRANT HELPS ‘LITTLE STARS’ SHINE IN BEAUTIFUL MINDS PROGRAM AT THE CENTRE FOR GIRLS

March 23, 2017

TAMPA, Fla. (April 3, 2017) – Suncoast Credit Union Foundation’s $7,500 grant to The Centre for Girls will provide fifty “Little Stars” with 45 weeks of Beautiful Minds Tutoring—a program designed to teach girls ages 5 through 10 to support one another through structured lessons in math, literacy and language arts.

This grant highlights the foundation’s longstanding commitment to promote the education, health and emotional well-being of children in the communities it serves. Suncoast’s support will help girls achieve and sustain positive self-image and confidence, positive social behaviors with both peers and adults and positive engagement with learning. Program emphasis is on strengthening core skills of age-appropriate interpersonal behaviors and social intelligence by teaching them how to effectively coach their peers and how to seek and use assistance. Reading, writing and computing is also incorporated in the program.

Sartura Smith, Director of The Centre for Girls, said that both teachers and parents were impressed with the pilot project of the Beautiful Minds program, which was introduced last summer. They experienced little girls teaching one another, celebrating each other’s solutions to math or word challenges, excited about learning and about helping their friends learn. Measured outcomes included the children’s increased self-confidence as learners and leaders.
The Centre for Girls in Seminole Heights is owned and operated by The Helen Gordon Davis Centre for Women. It is a safe place where girls ages 5 through 14 engage in a multifaceted STEM-based curriculum.

The Centre’s structured, arts-infused learning curriculum is designed to make learning fun while exploring passions, talents and academic/career pathways. Each month, the program incorporates a focus on a particular discipline. The Centre for Girls staff, professional artists and volunteer experts teach visual arts and photography, music and dance, spoken word and creative writing, fiber arts and fashion design, and more. STEM classes in robotics, coding and digital arts are taught in the centre’s on-site Spurlino Digital Lab. Professionals volunteer weekly as speakers, instructors or mentors on a broad range of learning topics, including “Money Smart 101” recently presented by Suncoast Credit Union staff for middle school girls.
